About the Institute

More

The Institute of Biomedical Sciences, established in 2005 as the pioneering research unit of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Maribor, has consistently united clinical and preclinical experts from around the globe to advance therapeutic, diagnostic, and technological innovations. Our work pushes boundaries of research within the Faculty and makes a significant impact on the broader region.

Our primary focus today lies in regenerative medicine, where we are developing cutting-edge drug delivery systems and patient-friendly wound care solutions. We also specialize in creating in vitro tissue and disease models that deepen our understanding of pathophysiology and pave the way for novel therapies and personalized medicine. Our mission is to find practical solutions to urgent clinical challenges, and we achieve this through collaborative efforts with clinical and industrial partners. Our scope has expanded to include translational medicine, ensuring that our research delivers tangible benefits to patients.

To address the complex challenges that demand an interdisciplinary approach, our team integrates expertise from (bio)medicine, cell and molecular biology, (patho)physiology, pharmaceutics, materials science, and additive technologies. Our research is supported by state-of-the-art infrastructure at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Maribor, featuring advanced equipment for material preparation, characterization, and design, as well as facilities for 2D and 3D cell culture. Additionally, we employ a wide range of analytical methods to assess cell culture growth and development at every level—from molecules to tissues.
